Support groups are one of the most powerful tools I’ve experienced for autistics wanting to learn and thrive with their unique brains. So much of the autistic identity is based on misinformation and invisibility, and being able to meet like minded people and talk about shared experiences is priceless.

Groups provide unique and structured places for folks to explore their neurotype in an affirming way. We spend time together to make sense of past experiences, problem solve current situations, and imagine new futures. I have found these type of groups to be profoundly effective in helping autistics find each other and to feel far more acceptance and confidence in themselves. We learn that identifying as autistic and accommodating ourselves can help us prevent burnout and find more joy in our daily lives. My groups are neuroaffirming, meaning we are not learning how to change ourselves to fit in to the dominant culture, although we do discuss tools and strategies to be better understood by others and to improve relationships with people in general.

I’m currently facilitating a group for autistic adults (no formal diagnosis needed) on Monday nights from 6-7pm, EST, beginning on April 15, 2024. Group sessions run for 6 consecutive weeks and the cost is 150.00. These are “closed” groups, meaning a fixed number of people start at the same time and can come each week, resulting in more familiarity and closer bonds between group members over time. These groups are not covered by insurance.
