If you're one of those many people who wake up in the middle of the night, it can be hard to get back to sleep sometimes. You might be feeling anxious or your might find that your mind is racing. Mindful creative therapy for sleep is a great way to spend some time in a relaxing way. As always, you don't have to do whatever craft i'm doing, but I like to introduce different things that I find helpful.

Today we're going to be doing one of my very favorite things, which is journaling. Journaling can be incredibly helpful when you're up in the middle of the night and want to fall back asleep.

A lot of the time when you’re awake in bed, you're thinking… and people mistakenly think that racing thoughts are what is keeping them awake. Actually what happens is when you wake up, the racing thoughts are often things that you didn't get a chance to address during the day. Your brain is literally waking you up to think about and deal with those thoughts that you either didn’t have time for or decided not to focus on.

A lot of people are intimidated by journaling and think that you need special prompts. While topics can be helpful, most of the time when I journal- it's just stream of consciousness. It's about getting whatever thoughts I have about the day out of my head and down on to paper.

If you do want to use prompts, it can be fun to make a bunch of them ahead of time so that in the middle of the night you're kind of surprised by them and you can pick a specific one to focus on.

I like to get whatever is keeping me awake out of my brain so that I can fall back asleep. I also like to go over and reflect on things that I wrote in the past, sometimes I don’t even recognize what I wrote!

I hope this is helpful for you if you're up in the middle of the night. I also hope that you can do a little bit of journaling or whatever crafting you like and fall back asleep.
