Mindful Creative Therapy for Sleep- Sewing

Many of us wake up in the middle of the night feeling anxious and have a hard time getting back to sleep. I find that doing different crafting activities can be very helpful. As we move our hands, we give them something to do. This can really help when our minds are racing, allowing us to unwind and fall back asleep.

You don't have to do whatever it is i'm doing on any particular day. I just like to introduce different topics and talk a little bit about why they can be helpful and soothing.

Today I am going to be talking to you about sewing. I really like hand sewing, and while I have two sewing machines I find that I hardly ever use them! Sewing machines definitely have their place when it comes to certain projects, but hand sewing (even though it takes so much longer) is very soothing. When I have control over the needle and I can really take my time and know where it's going… it just feels very relaxing. I love the feeling of pulling the stitches and feeling the thread pass through the fabric.

All the projects I have on this channel are quiet and simple. They don't take too much thought, which is good for the middle of the night! The projects are also quite portable so you can have them right next to the bed and easily sit there and do them.

If you're sewing with me I hope that you're finding it to be something that you enjoy doing. I notice that when i'm hand sewing it kind of makes me feel in touch with former generations of people, (often women) who would sew, whether in quilting bees, or mending clothing, or making special garments.

Remember that sewing (and any of these mindful creativity activitie) are things that you can do anytime, anywhere!
